Our goal is to provide an ever developing, quality Recreational Soccer program - year round - for the rural communities of the Kootenays.
Our programs are divided into two stages of player development: Non-Match Playing and Match Playing.
The Non-Match Playing groups are our youngest players - Minis and Grade K/1s.
Minis are geared towards developing a love of the game through fun skill exercises, designed to teach basic skills without actually doing rote dills. We want our youngest players to see a soccer ball and get excited to play!
Grade K/1 still has that skill game element, but begins to incorporate the basics of gameplay - passing, shooting and 1v1 play, leading up to small sided scrimmages with the intent on preparing players for match play, both in terms of skill development and emotional preparation.
Both of these groups have one practice a week for 30-45 minutes, with pricing to reflect that.
Match-Playing Age Groups continue this development pathway and incorporate regular Match Play against other teams.
Grade 2/3 starts off light. 6-a-side teams playing on smaller game fields with basic FIFA rules. (Ie - no offsides and referees explain their calls to the players)
Grades 4-6, 7/8, 9-12 and Adult League all play 8-a-side on Half Fields, with no deliberate contact rules and offsides when it is blatently obvious.
For Salmo this Fall we will start by having Salmo's teams play in the October 1st Jamboree, where the match playing teams from Crescent Valley, Winlaw, Slocan, New Denver, Kaslo, Nakusp and Burton will get together to spend the day playing matches against you and each other.
It is our hope to incorporate more of the weekly game system into Salmo's program - which would involve playing both at home and away games similar to Hockey, however we feel this is something that would benefit everyone by easing into slowly and structured for your community's comfort level.
STRUCTURE
Practices are overseen by a Regional Head Coach, a member of WKFC Paid Staff, with Youth Coaches available to support Volunteer Coaches.
Volunteer Coaches are encouraged but not essential. We want our Volunteer Coaches to be well supported and motivated - not parents who are doing it to ensure their players get a team.
If you want to help out but cannot commit to Coaching a Team, you can do so by becoming a Team Manager - who provides leadership to their team only on Match Days, running substitutions and motivating the players.
Volunteer Coaches and Team Managers all benefit from a 100% discount for the player whose team you coach/manage, as well as access to our online Library of Drill Plans, a Staff Jersey and clipboard.
